Description

The Ulriksdal nature reserve is an unusually well-preserved part of the Stockholmsåsen, an approximately 60 km long pebble ridge made of sand and gravel that was formed at the end of the last ice age. There are two pebble hills in the area, Kvarnkullen and Järvakullen. On the slopes of these hills are old seawalls from a time when the sea level was higher and waves crashed against the sides of the ridge.

At Kvarnkullen's highest point, 43 m above sea level, there was once a windmill. Today, only an old mill wheel remains. The mill wheel is surrounded by dry, open grassland with special vegetation. Plant species grow here that have probably been here since the Iron Age, such as pasqueflower and wild thyme, among others. Other parts of the reserve consist of different forest types, such as older pine forest, spruce forest and hardwood forest.

There are two ancient burial grounds within the reserve that consists of several visible graves. The burial grounds are probably from the Early Iron Age, 400-1050 AD.
