Gårdsby and Hemmesjö Beech Forest Nature Reserve
The Gårdsby and Hemmesjö Bökeskog (beech forest) is one of the pleasant hidden treasures in the vicinity of Växjö. Despite this fact, this nature reserve is relatively unknown. Walk through the sparkling beech forest in the summertime, and hear the call of the stock dove. Explore the lake trail to the pastures near Lake Lövsjön, and their multitudes of butterflies. Or hike to the natural spring in this area, set among damp autumn trails and red foliage. Many of the hardwood trees here are hundreds of years old, and serve as homes to unusual insects, such as the extremely rare Denticollis rubens beetle. The lesser woodpecker, wood warbler and the hawfinch also thrive in this area. In certain years, the lesser flycatcher can be heard. The gold-crested wren has been observed.
