Mönsteråsleden

The hiking trail is just over 80 kilometers long and follows a classic route through varied terrain. In the north, it connects to the Ostkustleden and in the southwest to the Högsbyleden. The trail can be hiked in both directions, in stages, or as a round trip. It winds through the entire Mönsterås municipality along lush paths, the Alsterån and Emån rivers, beaches, and through nature reserves. Mönsterås is a coastal municipality, so the trail is naturally gently undulating but without significant elevation changes. However, some parts of the trail are somewhat more challenging due to several rock slabs and larger stone sections that can be slippery after rain. Since the trail largely passes through forest terrain, it can be difficult to traverse in late summer and autumn when grass and undergrowth are at their peak. The trail is cleared sporadically. Information from hikers about the trail is valuable. Please let us know if you discover sections that need attention.

Along the trail, there are several wind shelters and an overnight cabin by Lake Norregöl, as well as fire pits for grilling. The overnight cabin has an indoor fireplace and an outdoor toilet. However, there is no electricity or water. The cabin is open to the public and does not need to be booked.

The Mönsterås Trail is marked around trees with durable red plastic bands, or alternatively with a red dot or line on trees or posts. The plastic band is labeled “Mönsteråsleden.” Double dots or lines indicate that the trail changes path or direction. You follow the trail throughout the hike by looking far ahead in the terrain.

The Mönsterås Trail was officially opened in 1988 when the associations Friluftsfrämjandet, the Swedish Scout Association, and Stranda Nature Conservation Association, together with the municipality, printed the first map. These associations managed the trail until the early 2000s. Nowadays, the trail is entirely maintained by the Mönsterås municipality with some voluntary help from local associations.
