Description

The fortified towers of Godnatt and Kurrholmen were built in 1857–63. They are keeps, a type of fortress that has been found in Sweden and the rest of Europe since the Middle Ages.

They became out of date even while they were being built, as the walls were too weak for modern artillery. The fortified towers of Godnatt and Kurrholmen were built in 1857–63. The technological development of artillery, including rifling, meant the walls could not withstand fire from new, modern canons. The plan for the fortress, which included several such towers was therefore never fully completed.

Godnatt has been used as lighthouse and several generations of lighthouse keepers lived here in total isolation. Guided tours to this exciting and unique place are run in the summer. Contact Karlskrona tourist office for more information.

The towers are part of the Naval Port of Karlskrona, inscribed on UNESCO’s list of unmissable World Heritage Sites in 1998.
