Description

The powder magazine and defensive tower on Mjölnarholmen was built in 1727 partly to prevent an enemy attacking the town over the ice.

Mjölnareholmen, like Ljungskär, was intended to function as a powder magazine and a fortified tower. Its location just off Trossö was intended to prevent enemy attacks by boat from the mainland or across the ice. Mjölnareholmen and Ljungskär both have what was called a “peace roof” which could be removed in times of war and armed with heavy artillery.

Mjölnareholmen is part of the Naval Port of Karlskrona, inscribed on UNESCO’s list of unmissable World Heritage Sites in 1998.
