Hike in the Footsteps of Elias Fries

Along the trail, there are information signs about the nature and cultural history of Femsjö. It was here that Elias Fries, the "Linnaeus of mushrooms," from Femsjö, made his first explorations.

The Yellow Trail offers a hike of about 4 km, but also has two shorter alternatives, the Blue and Red loops. The trail starts next to Femsjö School, at the octagonal information building, which is also equipped with a barbecue spot. There are also toilets, including a basic outdoor toilet.

Femsjö is an idyllic church village that was once the borderland between Sweden and Denmark. Today, it is located in Halland County but within the province of Småland. People have lived here for at least a couple of millennia. The area is surrounded by forests with moose and many other wild animals. There are also numerous lakes with good fishing opportunities. The geology is fascinating, with traces left by the ice sheet, glacial lakes, and meltwater rivers.

The plant life is well-documented by the world-renowned botanist Elias Fries, who was the son of the village pastor. Near the parsonage, you will find the Fries Museum, where you can learn more about Elias, who is known as the "Father of Mycology."

The church dates back to medieval times and has interesting ceiling paintings from the 18th century. Near the school buildings from the 1870s, there is now a pavilion that provides extensive information about the area's nature, geology, history, and culture.

At the end of the 19th century, Femsjö Parish had over 900 residents. Many emigrated to America during this time, while others moved to towns.
