Description

Enehagen was Värnamo’s fairground with merry-go-rounds, circus, candy stands and tombola. One of the attractions was a ride in a flat-bottom boat sliding down to the river Lagan. It was also here that the people of Värnamo arranged a festival to raise money for the town’s first fire engine in 1925.

When the Värnamo Craftsmen and Industrial Association held crafts fairs here in 1913 and 1921, the entrance was from Storgatan and the exhibitions were shown in Enehagen school. For the 1913 fair, the local company Jochnick & Norrman built the attraction: “fun wheel”. It consisted of a linoleum covered disc which rotated until everyone on it ended up against the padded edges.

Värnamo Mission Covenant Congregation bought the old fairground in 1927, and its church standing here today was completed in 1938.

Facts

This sign is part of the town history walk “Pinnapå”. The whole route is around 5 km and includes 12 signs. Pinnapå is part of “Värnamo – Tales of Our Town”, a historical exhibition in the cultural centre Gummifabriken, housed in Värnamo’s ancient rubber factory.

The signs are designed by Gro Knutsen and are inspired by spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar), a famous cultural heritage from Värnamo. (Hence the name Pinnapå, which means to walk on at a steady pace.)
