Description

The area around the square Gästisplan was Värnamo’s first centre. This is where the roads from Malmö, Vetlanda, Växjö, Jönköping and Halmstad met.

Gästis, the old inn described on a map from 1690, was located at Storgatan 57. The inn provided food, drink and accommodation for travellers and their horses. The inn closed in 1919, and since then, different activities and shops have been located in the block. In the late 1800’s, the inn was joined together with other buildings on both sides.

Växjövägen 1, Turisten, was probably built in the 1820’s and was first a store. In 1867, the newly founded Wernamo Secondary School for Boys rented some rooms in the building. Today, Restaurant Gästgivargården is found here.

Facts

This sign is part of the town history walk “Pinnapå”. The whole route is around 5 km and includes 12 signs. Pinnapå is part of “Värnamo – Tales of Our Town”, a historical exhibition in the cultural centre Gummifabriken, housed in Värnamo’s ancient rubber factory.

The signs are designed by Gro Knutsen and are inspired by spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar), a famous cultural heritage from Värnamo. (Hence the name Pinnapå, which means to walk on at a steady pace.)
