Description

Liljenäsviken is an extremely shallow bay that offers excellent resting opportunities for wading birds, especially between August and October. If you are lucky, you can see dunlins, common ringed plovers and common tringa species, which often visit the area. There are also waders, including little stints and grey plovers. The curlew sandpiper, red knot and temminck’s stint are usually only seen in small numbers, while the bar-tailed godwit, for example, is normally only seen in flight and rarely stops. Of the more famous waders, the sanderling, ruddy turnstone and great snipe have all been seen on a number of occasions.

In the south-eastern part of the bay there is a small reedbed that sometimes offers sights of the Eurasian bitten, bearded reedling and bluethroat as well as resting jack snipes in late autumn. At the end of April/beginning of May, there is a chance to see resting sea ducks such as the common eider, scaup, common scoter, velvet scoter and long-tailed duck. Some of the more rarely observed species include red-necked grebes, fulmars, kites, gyrfalcons, peregrine falcons, skuas, black-legged kittiwakes, Caspian terns, black terns, little auks, kingfishers, horned larks, Richard’s pipits, rock pipits and two-barred crossbills. In spring, the snow-free fields attract migrating birds such as geese, lapwings, golden plovers and starlings. During the winter months, white-tailed eagles and golden eagles are sometimes seen.

The entire area surrounding northern Bolmen offers excellent conditions for bird life, and the meadows in Svanaholm, the reed bays at the outlet of River Storån and its neighbouring bodies of water and Liljenäsviken are all worth a visit.
