Description

Sommen's FCASommen offers great opportunities for sport fishermen to pursue their hobby. The varied characteristics of the lake and the large range of fish species makes for diverse fishing regardless of whether it is carried out from shore, by boat or on the ice.Lake Sommen has an abundance of species, providing habitat for 22 types of fish. The most outstanding protected species are lake char and anadromous salmon trout. According to several studies and independent reports, these species have been declining for at least 50 years. Because of Sommen's characteristics, with its several narrow bays, shallow inlets, large pelagic areas, great depth and different nutrient status in the eastern and western basins, there is space for many fish species (i.e., many potential niches). However, Sommen is low in nutrients, which explains why it does not contain an especially large number of carp species.Sport fishing can be pursued with good results from shore or near the shore in spring and early summer. Angling with worms and bleak and spin fishing with a jig in shallow areas during these periods can lead to good catches of perch. If you are out for pike, try large jigs or long, narrow wobblers with green or blue colours. Pike are close to shore during this period and at a level of 1-12 m above deep areas. Bottom angling with worms during evening hours and at night provides an opportunity to catch eel, roach and perch as well as bream and tench in shallow inlets. As water temperatures rise during early summer, a boat usually is required because most fish species head out for deeper water. An effective fishing method for pike at this time is drift fishing or trolling at a level of 10-20 m over the lake's deep areas. This type of fishing sometimes can also result in catches of salmon trout or char. Evening or night fishing with this method at a level of 5-12 m can yield really large pike and sometimes pike-perch in the western part of the lake. During this period perch can be caught by jigging from a boat in detached shallows or at drop-offs at a level of 10-20 m.

Winter fishing on Sommen is popular. Jigging for Norwegian perch at a depth of from 10 m to 20 m can be really good periodically on new ice on the entire lake. In the eastern part of the lake, there is some possibility of catching char by jigging. When the ice is covered with snow, the western part of the lake is recommended because there is a population of perch there close to shore at a level of 3-6 m. Great caution is required when it comes to Sommen's ice; it is never safe throughout the lake.
