Description

Every year a large-scale amorous event takes place in Kronobäcks våtmark. In spring, thousands of pike meet to spawn in the shallow, warm water. The wetland also attracts many birds.

The 2.4-kilometre circular trail starts at Kronobäck cloister church ruins and continues around the wetland.

Chance to see pike

Kronobäcks våtmark is known as Sweden’s first “pike factory”. Every spring thousands of pikes swim here from Kalmar Strait to spawn. They offer an amazing sight as they splash among the tussocks in the flooded pastures. To draw attention to the valuable wetland, the annual “Pike Day” with many different activities, is organised in April.

Bring binoculars!

Kronobäck wetland is a fine birding spot. Wite-tailed eagle,

marsh harrier, and osprey are examples of birds of prey you can see here. In spring and autumn snipe and other waders rest on the wet ground. Reed bunting and other small birds can be heard from the reed beds in early summer.

Great excursion

Don’t miss the beautiful grave field along the marked trail. In spring, you will find a profusion of pasqueflowers at the feet of majestic oaks.
