Description

The unusually round and deep Lake Mien was found to be the site of a large meteorite impact that occurred about 50 million years ago. Ramsö (an island) in Lake Mien consists of rocks previously interpreted as volcanically formed. Eventually, it was understood that the volcano-like rocks arose through a completely different geological process - the impact of a large meteorite. For those interested in geology, both a trip around and on the lake can be of interest. In addition, the formation of the lake provides advantages such as clear and fresh water for the visitor who likes to bathe.

  • The meteorite impact has affected an area with a diameter of about 9 km
  • The crater is ring-shaped and deeply eroded
  • The age of the crater is about 90 million years
  • The crater formed in less than 30 seconds
  • The depth from the surrounding terrain is approx. 90 m
  • The central rise has a diameter of about 1.5 km and rises about 45 m
  • The crater consists of molten and strongly magnetically affected bedrock that reaches down to a depth of approx. 150 m. Are you interested in knowing more? Geophysicist Herbert Henkel has written about Mien - the curious follow the given link.
