Description

Skälhult, northeast of Lidhult, offers the perfect round after a hectic workday. Here you walk over logs and stones and bridges over Lidhultsån and can finish by grilling at the marked fireplace. An orange-marked loop of about 3 km leads you through the reserve. If you just want to take a short walk, the blue round of 300 meters is recommended. An easily accessible grill and fireplace with a beautiful lake view are located near the parking area.

Lidhultsån divides the nature reserve into a northern and a southern part, where broad reed belts and wetlands surround the main stream of the river. In the northern part of the reserve lies Skälhultsåsen, a glacial ridge covered with beech and mixed forest. The beech forest on Skälhultsåsen is home to many interesting species, several of which are on the red list. On the slope of the ridge, in the northeastern part of the reserve, you can find a well-preserved ancient tar pit. Within the reserve’s boundaries, there is also the forest lake Skälsgöl and Djurö bog.

The entire area north of Lidhultsån was previously enclosed farmland, and in 1830, the swamp forest on the river’s southern shore was used for haymaking. During the 20th century, the area reverted to forest.
