From a landscape of vast virgin coniferous forests and mires, birch covered low fells rise, to reach just over 500 metres a.s.l. Pessinki is crossed by several deep cliff ravines, once chiselled out by masses of meltwater in the ice age. Saatukkakursu is the most impressive, with luxuriant vegetation along the stream at the foot of the ravine. Marjakursu in the south is another impressive ravine.
