Description
Karesuando, Sweden’s northernmost town, is a brilliant place to discover the northern countryside and a variety of cultures. The community lies along the Muoniälven River, which forms the natural boundary between Sweden and Finland. Get to know the Sami, Swedish, Finnish and Tornedalian cultures and their history. Experience the arctic landscape in the midnight sun or the endless night of winter under the sparkling northern lights.
At STF Karesuando, you can choose from short-term flats and rooms with or without a kitchen. All rooms have TV and Wi-Fi. A conveniently located bus stop awaits you just outside the hostel, which is in the middle of the community.
There’s plenty to do in and around Karesuando if you want to get close to nature. Hunters and fishing tourists come in summer and autumn. In summer there are wonderful walking and paddling areas. When the snow comes, you’ve got skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing to look forward to.
The red hostel building from 1915 was originally built as an arbetsstuga, or “work cottage”, a sort of boarding school from the early 20th century where poor children were given accommodation, food, clothes and training in practical work during the school year.
