Description

Borenshult's locks that connect Göta Canal with Lake Boren are a popular destination. The height difference between the lake and the canal is just over 15 meters, which makes the lock staircase with the five locks the canal's steepest lock staircase. Here you can see the spectacle that takes place at the locks, see old meet new and be fascinated by the fact that the old technology still holds today.

The five locks in Borenshult took three years to build and the last two locks were completed in 1825. The lock guard residence is what is left of the old buildings at Borenshult.

In the serving pavilion, at the lower locks, customers could get something to eat and drink, something that was popular with both ship passengers and locals. It was common for ship passengers to walk between Borenshult and Motala. They had a good time while the ship loaded fuel in Motala harbor. Today there is no service left in the house. Borenshult's locks have a special place in the hearts of the people of Motala and is a place that many people show when they get a visit from outside.

At the locks you find a summer open kiosk where you can buy ice cream. Eating ice cream while watching boats go through the canal is a wonderful summer tradition in Motala!
