Description

The Öjaleden trail passes by many of the island's most interesting sights. You can hike a 6 km loop by combining the trail with a connecting gravel road.

The trail begins by the Landsort Bird Observatory and winds its way through deciduous forests, rich in wildflowers in the spring. There are also several impressive, large pines here. The trail crosses retired military roads which lead out to the sea. Leave the trail for a moment to enjoy a view of the sea, watch the birds or have a picnic along the cliffs. If you're lucky, you might just spot a seal.

The trail continues through forests and over cliffs, past the Ersta battery and into goat and cattle pastures to the north. Every spring, people gather to watch the animals arrive by boat. Livestock grazing is an important management measure that keeps the landscape open. Stop by the guest harbour at Norrhamn before you follow the gravel road south, back towards the village at Storhamn. Along the way, you'll pass the plague cemetery and the labyrinth.
