Actions

This nature reserve has scattered infestations of spruce bark beetles. It means that there are a lot of dead standing spruces in the forest and along paths. The spruces may fall suddenly and without warning. Watch out and avoid visiting the nature reserve when it is windy.

Description

The Rotholma nature reserve encompasses a verdant undisturbed forest located on soil naturally enriched with limestone deposits. In the area, you can find orchids such as the lady's-slipper and broad-leaved helleborine, in addition to over 200 species of fungi!

The land here was originally pasture and traces remain in the form of old hay barns, dying junipers and old wide-canopied deciduous trees. Grazing has kept the forest open and dappled with light. This grazing, in combination with the area's limestone-rich soils, has encouraged an array of light-loving grasses, herbaceous plants and fungi to grow here, including many endangered species.

You can choose to roam off trail or to walk along the narrow paths. There are no visitor facilities in the reserve.
