Description
Walk amongst old oak trees and enjoy birdlife and rare plants. Kristinehamn nature reserve since 1970..
Kummelön provides an old area of enclosed pasture land now filled with oak trees which are several hundreds of years old. There is also lime trees, bushes and herbaceaus plants which are unusual for this area.
Kummelön is located west of Kristinehamn and is perhaps the most popular nature reserve in Värmland. The accessible beautiful Southern Swedish grazing lands have been appreciated for a long time by the local population.
Up until the end of the 19th Century the people on Kummelön gathered together on the weekend before midsummer to celebrate ”Kummel Sunday”. This was one of the most important festivals in Eastern Värmland.
The area has been a nature reserve since 1970 and from the northernmost tip of the reserve there is an excellent view of Ölmeviken, one of the county’s best bird habitats. Facilities include a simple cottage, information boards, outdoor toilet without water and hiking trails. The trails pass through enclosed pasturelands with old oak trees and are 1 km and 0.5 km long.
