Description

Järsbergs runic stone is one of the oldest in Sweden, dating back to the 5th century, and is located south of Kristinehamn.

The stone is one of the more enigmatic stones and the inscription is difficult to interpret. Some say that the carver through the word Eril identifies himself as one of the Heruli, while other interpreters doubt this. The top of the stone may have been broken off which could mean that the word Eril might have a different meaning. The stone is from the 5th century which is before the Viking Age (800-1050). A pearl with the same dating as the stone has been found just next to the stone. Beads of this type are usually connected with women's graves.
