Description

Many exciting plants can be found where Arksjöberget slopes steeply down towards the Långseleån river. The reserve also includes a mountain plateau that is covered with small mires and virgin spruce forest.

Exciting plants

The screes comprise calcium-rich alum shale. The calcium and the warmth on the southern slopes mean that both alpine plants and species that require warmer temperatures both thrive here. Species such as the rock campion, the cinnamon rose and the ascending saxifrage all grow below the precipices. Other species include the maidenhair spleenwort, the forked spleenwort, the mountain woodsia, the thyme-leaf sandwort and the black baneberry.

Fire in the 1770s

The forest close to the precipices is younger than in other parts of the reserve. The pine forest that grows here bears traces of the fire that devastated this area in the 1770s. Other parts of the forest have been able to develop without the influence of forest fires for a long time.
