Description

Brattiken mountain rises 914 metres above sea level. To the south-east, there are precipices on several levels, where birds of prey find sheltered nesting sites. Below the mountainside, the landscape becomes flat with numerous mires.

Witch’s hair and Siberian jay

Between the precipices and the mires, there is a tall spruce forest that has been left to grow in peace. The spruces are old and often thick, with long strands of the yellowish witch’s hair hanging from their branches. The Siberian jay thrives here, and often comes up to say hello. Lying on the ground are dead tree trunks that have been broken down by many rare fungi.

Reindeer farming

Vapsten Sami village migrates with its reindeer through the area, which is of national interest for reindeer herding. The area, close to the mountains, has been a protected nature reserve since the end of the 1980s.
