Description
Främmermyran is an unusual type of mire. In the northern part there are four spring-fen mounds, which are formed when water with a high iron content flows up out of the ground. Unusual species thrive here. In July, you can see the marsh saxifrage in flower.
When the iron-rich water comes into contact with the oxygen in the air, it forms iron oxide – rust – which is not soluble in water and is therefore precipitated out. The rust is deposited in the peat, which over time forms a raised dome around the spring. This is known as a spring-fen mound.
Marsh saxifrage
The iron-rich springs create a special environment. One species that thrives here is the marsh saxifrage – there are around 17,000 examples of this protected beauty in the reserve, which start flowering in July. The moss flora is also special. The varnished hook-moss is particularly fond of iron-rich springs and is common in Främmermyran.
