South of Nordmaling, at the southernmost tip of the county, is the Kronören-Drivören archipelago area. This is where Västerbotten's stony moraine coast meets the fertile and rocky High Coast.
Kronören’s well-signed paths
Follow the marked path from the car part beside the road. Along the path you will find information signs described the area’s nature and cultural features. Here you can read about the saltpetre depository and the drying areas, flads and clonal spruces. A barbecue cabin has been build by the beach on Rönnören, and on Vedhällan there is a wind shelter and a barbecue area. As you head out towards Vedhällan, you pass a number of beautiful meres, and on the stony beach you can find sea aster and adder’s-tongue. Orpine and goldmoss stonecrop also grow on the flat rocks.
At the outermost point of Långroudden, a marked path leads over a shingle area and out to a beautiful coastal meadow, which is home to purple loosestrife, sea campion and the rare longleaf speedwell. The thorny sea buckthorn, with its yellow berries rich in vitamin C, grows on the exposed stony beach.
Kronören is the only site currently known in Sweden where the fourleaf mare’s-tail grows. The species grows like an upright tail in the shallow water off the beach at Stor-Sandskäret.
Rich bird life
Bird-watchers tend to gather at Langroudden during the spring, autumn and winter to see migrating birds. When the ice is still present off Umeå, Kronören and Långroudden are still a good alternative for anyone who wants to look for birds at sea.
