Description

The inhabitants of Norsjö have a wonderful bird lake right on their doorstep. The association Friends of Vajsjön looks after the lake as a destination and a valuable bird lake.

Lake with an exciting history

Vajsjön was previously part of Norsjön. At the end of the 19th century, the lake was lowered to increase the hay-making yield, at which point Vajsjön was formed. According to old documents, the annual yield was 2,000 carts of hay. This is equivalent to 400 tonnes in today’s measurements.

Vajsjön’s birds

The best time to visit Vajsjön is in the spring, before the ice melts and the meltwater overflows the grassy banks. At this time, common scoters, bean geese, whimbrels, spotted redshank and occasionally red-necked phalaropes rest at the lake during their journey up to the mountains. Mallards, wigeons and teals breed here every year.

The most recent bird inventory demonstrates the rich bird-life at Vajsjön. It is unique for a lake so far to the north and so far inland.
