Description
At the country border there is also the Altar Stone where it ́s said that assizes were held. The seal, from the middle of the 13th century, shows a shield with the Norwegian lion holding an axe of the St Olav type. On each side there are hunters with bows and arrows, taking aim at squirrels whose winter coats (grey pelts) were used to pay taxes to the Norwegian crown. The seal was used until 1570, when the Danish king rescinded the seal from Jämtland following its occupation. Jämtland, which had been part of Uppsala bishopric, was then transferred to Nidaros diocese. The Latin text says: The seal of the folk in Jamtland.
