Kristianopel’s first church was built when the town was founded in 1600 and replaced Sankt Petri kyrka in Avaskär (see Avaskär chapel). At midsummer in 1611 it was completely destroyed by the Swedish army headed by Crown Prince Gustav II Adolf.
A new church was needed and in 1618 work began to build one, with the support of the King of Denmark. The building work was led by Olluff Madsen. Lime and grey stone was brought from Öland and brick from Nättraby. The church was first used in 1624, although the building work was not completely finished, and was named Helig Trefaldighets kyrka (church of the Holy Trinity).
