Kuvaus

During the years of 1710 and 1711 were many small villages in the area affected by the plague. To stop the plague from spreading gave the priest in Älghult, Sven Arell, the villagers permission to bury their dead in a slope on the outskirts of the village.

As the years passed by were the old burial ground forgotten, but locals kept telling stories about it. In the 1920’ were there a boy who wanted to see if the stories were true, so he started to dig in the slope and found human remains. A memorial stone was placed in the slope and a preach once again had to declare the land as sacred. Today is it a beautiful place with some of the oldest oaks in Uppvidinge.

Faktat

In the beginning of the 1700’s was there a severe outbreak of the plague in Europe. Almost half of Stockholm’s population died during the years of 1710-1711. The plague probably first came to Stockholm and then spread to the rest of Sweden from there.

Småland probably got it from Kalmar which was an important seaport. Kalmar was one of the worst affected towns in Sweden and its not hard to envision how travellers and tradesfolk brought it to the small villages in the forests.
