Sikareveln vandringsstig

Sikareveln extends straight out into Möckeln lake and has a fantastic shoreline on both sides. Here you can enjoy the impressive surroundings that were created by the ice sheet!

Sikareveln is a glacial formation and is a popular resting place and overnight stop connected to the canoe trail in Helge å. It is also a magical spot for viewing the sunset. Here you can enjoy the crackling of the fire by the fireplaces and relax at rest areas. You will find sandy beaches on both the north and south sides of the sandbank and a virtually 360-degree beach experience at the farthest point of the sandbank.

You can spend the night here – both in the lean-to shelter and tents. You need a canoe check to stay overnight. You can buy this at the tourist information center in Älmhult and elsewhere.

Traces from the Ice Age

Sikareveln consists of glacial material (stone, gravel and sand) that meltwater from the ice cap brought with it in long tunnels under the ice when it retreated about 15,000 years ago. Sikareveln like some other islands in Möckeln forms a side branch of Älmhultsåsen which stretches in a southwest/northeast valley between Osby and Möckelns eastern shoreline. The islands are connected but only the upper parts stick out and are visible with the naked eye. Presumably, the sandbank consists of glacial material right down to the bedrock.

The sandbank cleans the water that slowly moves through the sedimants. The groundwater is then pushed through the lake bed and forms groundwater reservoirs between layers of soil and rocks under the lake. Möckeln is a drinking water source for Älmhult municipality.
