In the heart of Sweden, at the top of the Vätternlake and next door to Tiveden National Park, you can find a little town called Askersund. This cozy wooden town welcomes you with cobblestone squares, cafes, a harbor, small shops and a great atmosphere throughout the seasons. A visit in Askersund might be a great start or finish for your stay in Tiveden, as well as a great destination for a day trip during your stay. Here you can go for a stroll alongside the beach promenade, eat ice cream and enjoy the easy going flair that is omnipresent in the city. A bunch of events organised during the summer season will give you the opportunity to meet people of all ages. Still, nature it never far away in Askersund. Here you can paddle, hike and swim. Askersund has a lot to offer to nature lovers. The Vättern archipelago is a popular destination for both leisure boats and paddlers. Here you can discover about 250 small islands. On some of them it is even allowed to spend a night in your tent. Take a trip out with a rental boat, a kajak or the tour boat starting from Askersunds harbor. In the surroundings you can also find about 30 nature reserves, most with marked trails.
Over a bridge starting from the beach promenade, you can reach out to adventures on Borgmästerholmen, ”the mayor´s island”. Here you will find a camping site, where you can even spend a night in treehouses. If you are keen to take a bath, welcome to the lovely beach on the southern end of the island. Swedes use to say, that the Vätternlake is one of the coldest lakes in the country – are you accepting the challenge?
Askersund is a very children friendly city. Besides the island, they can also discover a brand new playground in form of a ship. What about playing pirates for a while before boarding the little train that connects the city center with Askersunds open-air museum? Here you can discover a petting zoo as well as some of the houses that resisted to a big fire that destroyed big parts of the city in 1776.
Besides the open-air museum, history interested visitors might enjoy a guided tour on Stjernsunds Manor, which is situated at the opposite side of the bay. This neo-classical gem contains one of Swedens best conserved interior furnishing, from the 1850s.
