Omschrijving

The church was consecrated in 1685 and is one of the biggest wooden churches in Sweden. It was built as a provisional building for the admiralty parish.

The admiralty church was shown on the first plan of the town and fortress in 1683. It is thought that the church, a central church made from wood which seated a congregation of about 4,000, was designed by Erik Dahlbergh. The church was quickly built as a temporary solution for the admiralty parish and was consecrated in 1685.

The church was treated as if it was provisional until as late as the twentieth century as it was originally intended that it would be replaced with a stone church. As a result, the church was poorly maintained for some time. In the 1980s the church underwent a major renovation and has now regained its original red colour. For a long time it was painted in a shade of yellow intended to inspire thoughts of stone and plaster facades.

Outside the church stands the well-known “Rosenbom” poor box, designed to resemble a boatman. The poor box was carved by admiralty sculptor Johan Törnström.

The Naval Port of Karlskrona was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of unmissable World Heritage Sites in 1998.
