Omschrijving

Stenshamn is the largest and most sheltered harbour in the eastern archipelago. The outer piers and parts of the inner harbour were built in 1917–18. The large amount of stone needed for its construction was quarried off Hasslö and transported to Stensham by boat. The harbour was completed with quays and a harbour area in 1938. One of the old buildings, the Lifeboat Station, used to house a lifeboat which was pulled up and down on rails, mainly by hand. The crew were employed by the Swedish Maritime Administration and comprised 6–7 men on the island, who received a symbolic payment for each callout. The lifeboat station was abolished in the 1960s. Today the building is owned by the local organisation Utlängan Stenshamns Intresseförening and can be hired for events and private parties. The lifeboat station also contains the photo exhibition: “Life on the island then and now” providing a unique look at life in the archipelago. If you would like to see it, there is a door to the rear of the building. Source: Inger Svensson
