Hiking
Kvalmsö is a beautiful island that offers a varied landscape and lovely views. You can reach Kvalmsö on foot via a bridge. Once on the island, follow the path marked with pink trail markers. Initially, you’ll walk through a forest dominated by spruce with some oak. Further along, you’ll reach the first grazing pasture, surrounded by a lovely stone wall. Where the path turns left, you can either continue along the road or go over the hill. If you choose the road, you’ll pass grazing lands leading up to a house. Before the house, turn right through another small pasture with hazel and other flowering shrubs. After passing this small pasture, the landscape opens up. Follow the trail over the open pasture and discover large oak trees, fine stone walls, and views down to the water. Eventually, the trail passes through an opening in the wall into an area with more rocks and juniper bushes. By the water, there is a nice rest area where you can take a dip. From the rest area, the trail continues up the hill, offering a great view toward Slättanäs and the Listerby archipelago. On the other side of the hill, the trail continues along the water in a wooded pasture. You’ll pass another rest area and some steps over stone walls. On the northwestern side, the land opens up again, with a rest area and a beautiful point to sit and enjoy. On the way back, you pass through grazing land with small crop islands featuring old cultivation piles and beautiful linden trees. At the end of the pasture, walk straight through a gate and continue back over rocky terrain on the hill. You’ll then return to the road. You can also vary the route and shorten it by cutting across the pastures.
Kvalmsö is wonderful to explore at different times of the year. On fine summer days, many visitors may come by boat to the western side, but the rest of the year is often peaceful. If you're lucky, you might see a sea eagle flying over the island or water. On the western side, there are several rocky areas and small sandy coves where you can paddle in with a kayak.
To get to Kvalmsö, drive in and park at the reserve parking lot at Vambåsa pastures near the large wetland, or at the parking lot by Hjortahammar burial ground. At the lower end of the large wetland, a road begins that leads out to Kvalmsö. Along the way, you’ll pass a few wire gates used to keep grazing animals in the pasture. Make sure to reconnect the fence after passing through.
