It is clear that Karlskrona was intended to be a future capital city. The main square, Stortorget, follows the ideal of the time of what a major city of a European power was supposed to look like.
The square is one of the biggest paved squares in Europe, with its large open piazza with church, town hall and administrative offices around the sides, following the pattern of the Baroque period. The number of churches and imposing administrative buildings also indicate the intended purpose of the town. Many visitors are fascinated by the huge square, which is also where the tourist office is based. The statue of Swedish King Karl XI, the founder of the town, gazes out over this impressive space. The imposing churches, Fredrikskyrkan and Trefaldighetskyrkan, also known as the German church, dominate the skyline. The churches were designed by Tessin the younger on Roman lines.
Stortorget is part of the Naval Port of Karlskrona, inscribed on UNESCO’s list of unmissable World Heritage Sites in 1998.
