Omschrijving

Welcome to a wonderful hike in a timeless forest and cloud landscape in a region formed by huge ice masses about 13,000 years ago

The trail runs through a landscape typical of the south-western side of Lake Vättern. The stage is easy to walk and follows good paths and at some point a low-traffic gravel or forest road. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Västra Vätterleden is marked with orange color on trees, poles and arrows.

The gently rolling landscape forms a mosaic of coniferous forest, bogs and wetlands, each with its own special character. The pine forest is light and airy and often covered by a carpet of gray and yellow-white reindeer lichen. It's also a typical site for moss and cypress lichen. The spruce forest is denser, has less light and the ground is covered with green moss.

If you want to "hear" the silence, you should stop in a spruce forest. These environments are in stark contrast to the more open bogs, wetlands and swamp forests located in lower, flatter areas.

The stage works well as a longer full-day hike, or a quieter two-day hike and can also be combined with connecting trails at each end for those looking for a longer hike

**History of the landscape

The last ice age has left a strong mark on the landscape and largely dictated the living conditions of the flora, fauna and people who settled in the area. The landscape was formed at the edge of the gigantic ice masses that once covered the whole country. When the glaciers retreated some 13 000 years ago, huge amounts of water, rock, gravel and sand were washed out, forming the lakes, rivers, deltas, ravines, plateaus and ridges etc. we see today.

The gently undulating landscape forms a mosaic of coniferous forests, bogs and wetlands, each with its own special character.
