Linné vandringsled

The hiking trail starts and ends at Station Linné. It is a medium-easy, approx. 3 km long nature trail that takes about an hour to walk. Good footwear is recommended. Stay on the path as much as possible! The path is clear and marked with yellow arrows.

Follow the dirt road that leads up to Station Linné about 400 meters east (pass the large pear tree on the right side of the road by approx. 50 m). Turn left through the opening in the stone wall, across the field northeast direction, go over the next stone wall and you are now inside the "diversity bed".

The diversity bed is very species-rich, but also houses some Iron Age remains in the form of house foundations. The path continue down to the north-east corner of the meadow where another stone wall is passed. The path meanders further about 200 m before you arrive at Gamla Skogsby, a 1500-year-old Iron Age village!

Gamla Skogsby. At least ten house foundations from the Iron Age are hidden here. Among these one of what is considered to have been one of Northern Europe's largest chieftains' halls! What looks like the remains of a cattle street is included in other words, the long sides of the 47 m long building! Can you find it? (After another approx. 200 m, after there is a sign posted that tells more about this unique relic).

Mowing meadow with chopped trees. The meadows and trees are taken care of by a local, non-profit association that contributes in this way to keep old customs alive while benefiting biodiversity in a decisive way! A perfect place to enjoy a picnic in the open air, but don't forget to take any rubbish home with you.

Follow the path until you reach the next meadow. There you turn left and go through the entire meadow. Continue 20 m into leaf forest before you take the path to the right up the edge of the ditch, a further 20 m away. Follow the channel approx 200 m until you come out on the next meadow edge. Follow this for about 30 m and then turn left through the opening in the stone wall and into the Mittlandsskogen. Along the entire route described under this point there are large quantities of grape snails (Helix pomatia), so walk carefully!

You are now once again in Mittlandsskogen, one of the country's most species-rich environments. Right here you walk along a more than 15 km long, hand-dug ditch that was built during the interwar years. It starts at the edge of Stora Alvaret and flows into the Baltic Sea north of Gårdby. With its water, the canal gives the already species-rich area one more higher diversity of both animals and plants! Follow the path for about 300 m until the forest opens up and you come out into the next field.

Cultivation fields. In some years, alfalfa or clover is grown here – plants that attract people when they bloom huge amount of insects. Even along the stone wall it usually buzzes quite well on sunny days. Follow the edge of the field for approx. 200 m, until you reach the stile that you cross. Continue 20 m straight ahead along the stone wall to the next step and go over it too. Or: Shortcut (500 m closer). Round the large cairn as soon as you come out of Mittlandsskogen. Follow the field edge/path back to Station Linné.

You are now close to the northernmost edge of Stora Alvaret: an area that houses a very special flora and fauna with a number of species unique to Sweden. The orchid bloom in the month of May is world famous! The Öland cows that graze here during the summer months can sometimes be perceived as a bit curious, but if you ignore them and they soon tire. Grazing is necessary to prevent overgrowth. Follow the stone wall for 1 km along the northern edge of the field, until you reach another shack. Go over here.

Turn left immediately after the stop and follow the path back to Station Linné. The approximately 100 m long stretch from the statte and alvar edge to the station site is bordered by a sedge bush, lots of herbs and bushes and to the east of the path, closest to the station site, there is even a wetland. Even though it's only one 100 m long stretch with very affected nature, the area is very rich in species.
