Omschrijving
The Navvy Trail is a 55 km hiking trail from Abisko Östra to Rombaksbotn Fjord in Norway. The trail follows the supply road that was constructed at the end of the 19th century to transport material during the construction of the railway.
The stretch between Björkliden and Tornehamn is a very easy hike and passes through verdant meadow birch forest with tall-growing herbaceous plants such as Globeflower and Alpine Blue Sow-thistle. The tour begins on the east side of the railway tracks opposite the train station in Björkliden. After about half the stretch you reach a vista point with a view of the Laponian Gate (Čuonjávággi). In Tornehamn you first arrive at the Navvy Graveyard, Rallarkyrkogården. The graveyard lies on the left side above the trail and there is a rest area near it. The fabled cook, Svarta Björn, lies buried here. Between the graveyard and the railway there is a stone commemorating Svarta Björn. Those who want to visit Tornehamn church continue straight ahead on the Navvy Trail, slowly descending after the Navvy Graveyard. After a short distance, the supply trail divides. The right branch turns off towards the church and the old navvy settlement. The other branch continues to Kopparåsen.
