Opis
The forest in Näsuddberget nature reserve looks just like it used to in the past. Capercaillie, hazel grouse and black woodpecker all thrive here. The trees here grow old and stately, and eventually become home to the various polypores found in the ancient forest.
Blueberry forest
Exciting stories are hidden away in Näsuddberget’s blueberry forest. The oldest trees are almost 300 years old and have survived forest fires. You can still see the charred remains of trees here.
An enormous tree lying on the ground may appear to be dead, but insects and fungi are teeming under the bark. It can take several hundred years before the tree trunk is broken down with the aid of countless small organisms, once again becoming soil.
Birds and plants
The ancient character of the forest means that the area is good for the black grouse, capercaillie, hazel grouse, three-toed woodpecker, black woodpecker and Tengmalm’s owl. On the slopes, mineral-rich areas can also be found around springs, where plants such as alpine saw-wart, northern coralroot, common oak fern, sheathed sedge, woolly feather-moss, fountain apple-moss and brown mosses all grow.
Please do not pick the plants, but feel free to pick mushrooms and berries in the reserve.
