Description
Sjöborg (Elleholm) was a fortress on the north side of Elleholmsön, the island where the Mörrumsån river flows into the Baltic Sea. In the Middle Ages, Sjöborg belonged to the diocese of Lund, which moved to this powerfully fortified town with plenty of provisions in a conflict with King Valdemar the Great (Valdemar I of Denmark). The Swedes burned the castle in the war between Sweden and Denmark in 1564 and it was never rebuilt. Elleholm church was built in 1705 and this is also the site of Elleholms hovgård, an important estate in the Middle Ages. Nearby Bodekull (today Karlshamn), which was a better location for a port, gained its town charter in 1664.
