Gammaltorp church outside Sellersburg has an interesting history. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, this was the site of Vesan, a sound separating Listerlandet from the mainland, which was crucial to local seafaring. The church was built on a central island, which was easy to reach by boat. The area was navigable by sailing boat until the eighteenth century but later became overgrown. In the early nineteenth century, surplus water was drained and the area was dammed. So the height at which Gammaltorp church lies today is what is left of the island. A new church was built on this spot in the 1790s, but due to unrest and war, the tower was not completed until thirty years later. There is also a legend that Vikings overwintered on the island and built the first church in the area when Christianity reached Sweden. Source: The Church of Sweden and Visit Blekinge
