Description

Isaks is the only seal sanctuary area in Blekinge, although seals are found in other places in the county. The harbour seal colony at the site has been known about for a long time and is distinct from the harbour seals in the western sea. This may be because they are what are left of the first seals to colonise the Baltic Sea. Isaks kläpp is one of three very important areas for the Baltic harbour seal population during birth, suckling and moulting. The other two sites are Värnanäs and Eckelsudde in the county of Kalmar. The harbour seal thrives in shallow coastal areas where they can catch fish. There must also be suitable places for them to lie on sandbars or rocky islands. The seal sanctuary area at Iskas kläpp covers almost 125 hectares and visiting is prohibited from 1 April to 30 September. Source: Blekinge County Administrative Board
