Description

Nestling in a rich historic landscape, Sillnäs is a popular destination for walkers, birdwatchers and anglers. The northern part of the nature reserve bears traces of a larger settlement from the transition between Stone Age hunting and farming. It is linked to the nearby settlement complex of “Siretorps sandbackar”. In later centuries, up to the nineteenth century, Sillnäs served as common land for the village of Istaby. At the time, the area was used for grazing, as a source of firewood and timber, and for temporary crop farming on fields known as “lyckor”. There were also a few crofts and outbuildings on the promontory. An impressive sheep track 600 metres long still runs north to south through the area. The forest contains defences from the Second World War and there is a lighthouse eleven metres high on an island to the south. Source: County Administrative Board
