Valuable nature
Torhamn bird station is on the outermost tip of the Torhamn peninsula where plenty of birds rest in the inlets. The shoreline mainly consists of coastal meadows and on the eastern side of the cape there is a grove of broadleaf trees where the bird station is located. The station was founded in 1961 and was originally housed in old military barracks. For a period, the area was used for military exercises, which meant that ornithological research could not be carried out and the station was forced to close. In spring 1997, operations were started again as military activity reduced considerably. In 1999, a new station was built, consisting of a clubhouse and a hut for ringing birds. While you are in Torhamn, don’t miss a visit to the classic Café Måsen. If you feel like paddling your way out into the archipelago, there is Torhamns kajak. Source: Karlskrona Ornithology Club
