Nature reserve
Tromtö is known for its beechwoods. The island invites visitors to stroll through its beautiful manor house landscape with its coast, fields, oak meadows, and the beech trees. Tromtö was part of the Johannishus Estate. South of Tromtö manor there is an “English park” and the paths around a forested hill are highly visible in the landscape. On the eastern side, the paths lead up to a lookout point with views over the water to the west.
Tromtö brickworks was built in the 1760s but today only ruins remain. The claypits, now filled with water, belonged to the brickworks.
A number of ancient monuments are found within the nature reserve. There is a burial cairn, a stone block resting on smaller blocks and a stone circle from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. There is also ancient farmland with clearance cairns from prehistoric times.
Tromtö nature reserve comprises the Tromtö headland with neighbouring islands, skerries and water. There is also a heron colony here where herons return to nest.
The rules for the nature reserve are shown in the link below, but, for example, dogs must be kept on a lead other than when hunting, you may not ride a horse or a bike other than on the road or on marked paths, you may not pitch a tent, park a caravan or camper van, light a fire, or use a camping stove or disposable barbecue other than in a place designated for the purpose. Tromtö is also a good birdwatching spot so respect the bird protection rules!
