Description

Granåsen's nature reserve stretches across the Lungsjöån valley. The southern part of the reserve consists of a long slope with older spruce forest on fertile land. The central part is dominated by leafy swamp forest along Lungsjöån, and marshes with sparse pine forest. In the forest upwards in the north you find traces of former forest fires and the forest has unusually large trees of aspen and birch.

Here you can get acquainted with many plants and animals that thrive in the northern forests. Thanks to the large amount of dead trees, it is especially good for beetles and other insects that live in the woods of the trees. Many of these species today find it difficult to survive in managed forests through the lack of dead trees, but here in Granåsen they have access to dead wood to live in.

Granåsen carries traces of various natural disturbances such as fire, trees felled by storm, attack by European spruce bark beetle and beaver dams. In November 2001, a large gap was formed in the forest up in the southern slope when about 500 spruces blew down and formed a large "storm hatch". The forest can look messy in its places, but on the other hand it is necessary for living of all kinds to find a suitable habitat. In its places, the moss is watery, the water is rippling and the shade cools. Elsewhere, the barriers to dead trees are high and the marshland sank. Nature is not prepared but it is here for you to experience!
