Omschrijving
A visit to Stora Fjäderägg stays with you long after you leave, both in body and soul. The feeling of being on an island with just a few others, living close to the forces of nature, is an experience that’s hard to put into words.
You come here to find peace - but in an active way. The walk from the boat up to the lighthouse is an unforgettable experience, and nature’s ever-changing moods make each visit unique.
Here, you have time to simply be. A day on Stora Fjäderägg might look like this: You wake up when you’re fully rested and prepare a leisurely breakfast, perhaps enjoying it outside if the weather allows. Then, a walk in any direction - maybe you’ll spot seals or rare birds, or if it’s autumn, you might find chanterelles or berries. You can discover your own quiet spot to gaze at the sea or lose yourself in a good book. If you’re lucky, you might meet the ornithologists and witness the banding of a rare bird. Take a refreshing dip in the sea, go for a run, or admire the beautifully restored lighthouse. If the lighthouse keeper is around, he’s always happy to show you inside.
Stora Fjäderägg is perfect for those who love being close to nature but still appreciate certain comforts - like a cozy bed, a kitchen with an electric stove, and warmth on colder days. It’s an ideal destination for active families who enjoy exploring the shoreline, spotting seals, or collecting beautiful stones. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, as the island is a nature reserve.
The island sits nearly 20 kilometers out to sea, so weather and wind can affect the journey. However, conditions are often better out here than forecasts predict. From the island, you can watch the low-pressure systems sweep across the mainland while you stay dry. We always adjust our transport to suit the weather.
A warm welcome!

How to get to Stora Fjäderägg
First, make your way to the Norrfjärden ferry terminal, located north of Umeå near Sävar. You can get there by public bus from Umeå—search for "Norrfjärden, Umeå" at www.tabussen.nu.
From Norrfjärden, take the free ferry operated by the Swedish Transport Administration to Holmön. There is free parking at the ferry terminal, and the crossing takes about 40 minutes. Check the timetable at www.trafikverket.se/resa-och-trafik/farjetrafik/holmoleden/. Please note that some departures require advance booking.
Once on Holmön, you’ll have a few hours to explore the island. You can take a stroll or rent a bike—just let us know in advance. Your luggage can be left next to the taxi boat dock, about 100 meters to the left of the ferry, or stored at the Boat Museum, a few hundred meters further into the island. If you’d like lunch or coffee, Novas Inn, located in the harbor, is a great option.
The final stretch of the journey is by taxi boat to Stora Fjäderägg, departing from Holmön at 15:00. The boat is operated by a trained skipper, and life jackets are available on board. The trip takes about 25 minutes. Departure times may be adjusted due to weather conditions, but we will notify you as early as possible. The skipper always has the final say on when the boat departs to ensure everyone's safety.
If you have prepaid for the trip, you are automatically booked on the taxi boat.
