During week 32 and 33 there are several competitions in the aura of Vasaloppet. There are a lot of people on the trail this weeks, we recommend to choose some other weeks to hike St Olav Rombo Way at this stage.

Opis

Pilgrimage along the Vasaloppet track! This stage is a walk in the woods along the same stretch that Gustav Vasa once skied along. The trail is even and easily walked but there are a few hills. This includes the alternative route up to Hökberget. If you take that you will be rewarded with a great view over Österdalälven.

You pass several old chalets. One of them is Eldris, here you can spend the night in a shelter or in a cottage. There is another cottage with accommodation on the stage and both are run by the Vasaloppet Foundation. Visit Vasaloppet.se for more information.

You can follow the orange markings of Vasaloppet for the length of this stage that starts at Mora church and ends at Oxberg´s chapel.

Read more about the stage

The 17th lstage of St Olav Rombo Way follows the Vasaloppsleden from Mora church to Oxberg's chapel. The next stage continues on the Vasalopp track to Evertsberg's chapel, where it turns off towards Älvdalen. The Vasaloppsleden is one of Sweden's most appreciated hiking trails.

In Mora there is a lot to see and experience, Siljan, Zorngården and the Zorn museum, Mora church and the Vasalopp museum at the Vasalopp goal. Shopping on Köpmangatan and much more.

In Kråkberg outside Mora there is an old St Olof's spring.

Between Hökberg and Oxberg, you can successfully make a detour up to Gopshusberget. You are rewarded with a view of the sparkling Österdalälven. In Hökberg you pass beautiful farmsteads.

The hike can be done without a tent as there are rest cabins and other accommodations to sleep in along the way.

In Gustav Vasa's footsteps

Gustav Vasa flees during the 16th century from the Danish king Christian II. He seeks support from the parishes in Dalarna, but they reject him. When the Dala people become aware of King Kristian's evil intentions, they send out a group of men on skis to retrieve Gustav. They get hold of him and he accompanies them back to Mora where he takes on the task of leading the rebellion against the occupying power. 400 years later, a ski race is started to pay tribute to Gustav Vasa's memory. It will be a success already in the first year.

Nowadays, the Vasaloppsarenan lives all year round.

Walk in the footsteps of the pilgrims

Romboleden (Rombo Way) is a pilgrimage route that people began using in the 11th century. The Romboleden is Sweden’s longest pilgrimage route at 900 kilometres long. It starts in Köping in Västmanland and finishes in Trondheim on the Norwegian Atlantic coast. If you walk the entire trail, you will experience a beautiful and varied landscape. You will walk on old chalet paths, over mountains with magnificent vistas and along narrow country gravel roads. You will find easy one-day walks with cafés along the way, and long treks that take several days. The route often passes through small villages.

Would you like to walk with a Pilgrim’s Passport and collect stamps from each stage? The medieval Pilgrim’s Passport allowed a pilgrim to walk in the whole of Europe without being stopped by rules or boundaries. These days it is just a nice memento. The Pilgrim’s Passport can be collected at several stage starting points and from the web page of Rombo Way.
