Description
Highlands Trail Stage HÖ15 between Vikskvarn and Lövhult. There is much to discover here.
If you start in Vikskvarn, you will see the remains of the old mill. Only the ruins of Vikskvarn, as it was called, remain. The stream runs through the ruins and has exposed the geologically interesting Almesåkra formation, a 700-800 million-year-old sedimentary rock series, which has made the mill ruins a classic study site for bedrock geology. The mill is located in a scenic gorge south of Almesåkrasjön.
However, if you start in Lövhult, which is a few kilometers from Nässjö station, you will reach the outdoor area where outdoor enthusiasts, joggers, and elite athletes meet – on nature’s terms.
The nature reserve covers 220 hectares and includes mystical forests, living meadowlands, Småland's meadows, and babbling streams. The exercise loops of 3, 5, and 10 kilometers are popular both in summer and winter. If the snow is insufficient at this high elevation, the trails are prepared with artificial snow. There is also a toboggan slope, a riding arena, jumping fields, and riding trails, as well as a paved exercise loop for wheelchairs, roller skis, and inline skates. Both the campsite and the hostel are open year-round. For food, you can enjoy grilling sausages at the barbecue spots or have a snack at the Exercise Center.
Along Stage HÖ15, you can experience a little bit of everything:
Västra Bråna - The large village with beautiful pastures offers a glimpse of the cultivated landscape that once dominated the area. The meadow is still mowed with a scythe, just as it was 100 years ago. This is one of the few deciduous meadows in the municipality, with birch, rowan, aspen, mountain ash, lime, beech, hazel, and willow – and a variety of beautiful flowers. Take the opportunity to refresh your knowledge of Swedish flora!
Spexhultasjön - Take a well-deserved swim break in one of the municipality’s largest lakes. Spexhultasjön is part of the Emån water system and is the water source for Nässjö city. The lake is just over three square kilometers in size, but at its deepest, it is only four meters deep.
Torsa Stones - An impressive and legendary ancient site from the Iron Age. The large burial ground with round stone formations, square graves, stone circles, dolmens, and standing stones was established between 400-700 AD. It also features Sweden's largest trident, Drakaröret. This site was not visited at night, as folklore says the dragon would guard its gold there.
Huluberget - From Huluberget, the second highest point in southern Götaland, 364 meters above sea level, the view is expansive. Bring your camera, climb up the ten-meter-high lookout tower, and see if you can spot even further. There are also large boggy areas to explore here.
